David Weir Biography

David Gillespie Weir is a Scottish footballer who plays in the centre back position. The thirty eight year old currently wears the number three shirt for Rangers FC, and is undoubtedly nearing the end of his professional career due to his age.

David Weir started his career at youth level playing for his University side before moving to the Falkirk side in 1992. While at the club, Weir made over one hundred and thirty appearances and scored eight goals, which is an impressive goal tally considering he is a defender! In 1996 the Scotsman moved to another Scottish side, Hearts. While at the club, David Weir enjoyed seventy six caps and six goals, and also won his first major honor: The 1998 Scottish Cup.

In 1999, after three years at Hearts, David Weir moved to English club Everton FC after his talent as truly recognized. He made an outstanding two hundred and sixty nine appearances for the Merseyside club, as well as being appointed the club captain. He also played European football while at the club, but Everton released the player before the end of his contract.

It was Scottish club Rangers FC that benefited from the player’s early release, signing him in January 2007 on a six month contract, although he has already signed a contract to extend the previous deal to keep him at the club until the end of the 2007-08 season. While at the club so far, David Weir has made over fifty appearances, helping the Scottish club to win the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup, both of which were won in the 2007-08 season.

David Weir has had a very long, successful international career. He won his first cap in May 1997, where his country lost by one goal to nil against the Wales national side. Weir announced international retirement in 2002, but when Walter Smith was appointed Scotland manager near the end of 2004, the centre back decided to come out of retirement and play for his country once again. Overall, David Weir has made sixty one appearances for Scotland, with his only goal coming against Latvia in the World Cup qualifiers in 2002. Weir has also captained his national side four times, including captaining Scotland on his fiftieth cap for his country, which was a game that put him in to the ‘Scottish Football Hall of Fame’.
